In recent years,
there is growing interest in developing wind energy resources. Wind energy is
intermittent and hence poses considerable difficulties to utilities and system
operators in scheduling the wind power generation. To alleviate these
difficulties, AMI Environmental has developed a forecasting system that
accurately predicts next-day wind speed and power. The AMI state of the art
forecasting system is:
 |
based on the most
advanced numerical weather prediction models and wind modeling technologies
(mesoscale models MM5 and WRF, high-resolution wind model DWM), |
 |
suitable for
sites with complex flow such as mountainous, offshore and coastal regions
where data may be sparse, |
 |
fully deployable anywhere with only
a minimal amount of site-specific data to provide daily forecasts. With
built-in interface with large-scale weather predictions (regional ETA, global
such as GFS/AVN and ECMWF), the AMI system can generate daily forecasts for any
location in the world. If available, onsite real-time meteorological and wind
generation data can be used by an adaptive statistical module to improve
forecast accuracy, |
 |
user-friendly
with Internet-based data access. Daily forecasts (normally twice daily at 00
and 12 UTC) are delivered to the user by e-mail and/or uploaded to the user's
server. For each wind plant, AMI also maintains a secured, password-protected
website for Internet access; and, |
 |
cost effective
since it is based on the use of fast and inexpensive Linux PC with
multiprocessors. |
